Winner of the top prize at the biennial, Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi eloquently draws our attention to the graphic depiction of blood in a confined space. The work is intensified by the current uprisings in north Africa and the Middle East even though the work was conceived before the unrest began.

Walking into this space, one automatically starts thinking of the current situation in North Africa and the struggle for change in the Middle East. The confined space of blood draws our attention to chaos and destruction. But aside from just seeing a sea of blood, the artist captures our desires for hope. As you work across the landscape it begins to change in an instant. A sea of foliage emerges out of a negative confined space.

Being at the exhibition in May, I absolutely fell in love with this work and this is one artist I will continue to follow.
